Can Aquamid be used in the back of the hands?

January 3rd, 2013
Q.
Can Aquamid be used in the back of the hands? I have a youthful face and body, but my hands are those of an old lady!!! I could not afford to have filler which does not last more than a year or so and wonder if Aquamid could be used. I’ve been told fat transfer may be an option but this would be much more invasive and I’m guessing expensive. I am a nurse and need to clean my hands regularly with products which are very drying, I use sunblock on a daily basis, however my hands look awful, I would love to improve them with a filler
many thanks.
A.
Although I can see the apparent attraction of using permanent fillers, I would not use a permanent filler in the hands.
I have seen HA fillers last surprisingly well in the backs of hands (including my own!). Radiesse has a good reputation for hands although I have not personally used it in this area.
Also, don’t forget that ageing hands are not just about volume loss. Poor tone, texture, age spots and pigmentation can all be addressed on the hands just as we would on the face. Tretinoin, hydroquinone and AHA’s all are useful when rejuvenating the hands.
Please don’t hesitate to get back to me if you need any more advice.

Would dermal fillers work on my acne scars?

December 11th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Forrester,
I had quite bad acne as a teenager and also as an adult which has left me with with some pitted scars on my face. They are mainly on my cheeks and they are quite noticeable, make-up or not. Do you think that fillers would work to plump out the scars at all? They are not very big, but there are quite a lot of them. Also, if fillers can work would you suggest I have any specific ones in particular?
Thank you for reading my problem and I look forward to receiving any advice you can offer me, Thanks.

A.
Dear Kim,

Fillers can help with plumping pitted acne scarring but often need to be combined with some form of other procedure such as dermaroller or INTRAcel. A hyaluronic acid filler wold be the best choice – something like Restylane or Juvederm.

What is the cost of a syringe of permanent dermal filler for lip augmentation?

December 11th, 2012
Q.
What is the cost one syringe of permanent dermal filler for lip augmentation(volume precisely)?
I’ve had temporary dermal fillers done on my lips and been satisfied with the results. For a subtle change I would opt for one syringe for upper and lower lips. I’ve always used Restylane as I liked the first result of it. My fillers would last about 10 to 12 months. However when I got it done the first time my fillers were completely gone in a week. What could have been the reason.
Now I’m considering getting permanent dermal fillers for my lips for their volume and I would like to know their cost and what names are they available? Does Restylane have permanent fillers?
Where can it be done in Birmingham, UK?
A.
I would absolutely NOT recommend having any form of permanent filler in your lips.
Although it may seem a good idea, in my opinion the safety advantages of HA fillers far outweigh their lack of longevity. I would recommend Restylane Lip Volume or Emervel Lips.

How can I achieve fuller lips with out getting a ‘trout pout’?

November 30th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Peter,
I would like to have fuller lips but I am worried about getting a so-called ‘trout pout’ like many celebrities seem to fashion these days. Id there any kind of filler that I should stay clear of or any that you would recommend for the lips?I don’t want a huge change just more volume so my lipstick looks better and my face is more proportional. Also, I am worried about how to find a good clinic to get the procedure done , any tips for this? Thanks for your help and I look forward to reading your view.
A.
Hello,

I would very definitely go for a mainstream HA filler for the lips. Probably Restylane Lip Volume or Juvederm. A skilled and sensitive practitioner will never over-fill the lips. Lips should never look ‘treated’. However, remember that lips are an area of the face that will always swell and bruise for a day or two, so be prepared for some downtime.

If you don’t have a personal recommendation then you could start with the Restylane practitioner finder at http://www.restylane.co.uk/Practitioner-Finder/

What treatment would you recommend for newly formed wrinkles from neck to chest?

November 30th, 2012
Q.
Hello there, my question is regarding treatment of the decolletage its not something Ive ever thought about until this last week when I woke up with a wrinkle right down the middle of my chest from my neck that had not gone by the time I was dressed! but gone at night time. Iam now worried that a permanent wrinkle has formed and as I age currently 35 it will be permanent. They say dermal fillers is the best way to treat this area is that correct? or would botox be better? also is it too late to prevent any further lines? if not what do you suggest lots of moisturiser? thank you for your help.
A.
Good question.
No to Botox for the décolletage.
The lighter HA fillers such as Restylane Vital do work well on this area. In addition I would consider use of a Vit C Serum and cautious retinol.
Collagen-induction treatments such as micro-needling (Dermaroller) and INTRAcel definitely have a role.
The best results come from using combinations of these.

What skin advice would you give to a man in his 30’s?

November 20th, 2012
Q.
Dear Peter, I’ve just read your answer to the question – ‘Can you recommend skin treatments for a woman in her 30’s’ and I am wondering if the same advice applies to men in the same age bracket. I am thinking not due to us having tougher skin? and was wondering if it is different what do you recommend for men to try and put off the signs of ageing before Botox. Coming from a man who until recently has not paid any attention to his skin!! and can see sign of wrinkles appearing thanks for your help.
A.
Dear Paul,

Yes, we men do have tougher skin but the same principles will apply. Sunscreen, Vitamin C Serum and a medium Retinol. Not an overnight miracle but over time these will have greatly beneficial effects. Men tend not to be great with use of sunscreen. Those UV rays are damaging your skin 365 days a year – the simplest thing that you could do in your 30’s is use a daily sunscreen. I really rate Glotherapeutics Oil Free SPF 40+ It’s lightweight and not too white or shiny.

How can I remove the fillers in my face?

November 19th, 2012
Q.
I had the outline fillers inserted in my face, cheeks and all my face , and lips too but I used outline filler more than I should and now I need to remove the extra filler outline inserted in my face because I had more than I should, and I realize unfortunately that they can’t go away for about 5 years, and I don’t want them , I am so depressed and don’t know what to do. I want to avoid a surgical operation so please can you help me to find a solution? Is there something like peelings or massages or other things that could help the outline be reduced? Anything that helps? that I could do? I would be grateful if you let me know and thank you in advance.
A.
This really depends on which filler was used. If it was a hyaluronic acid filler (HA) then injection of the enzyme Hyalase (hyaluronidase) will usually disperse the filler. However, if the filler is not a HA then there will be little that can be done to remove it.
Sorry not to be more helpful.

How can I increase the volume in my lips?

November 13th, 2012
Q.
Hello I’m interested in increasing the volume of my lips, they are very thin, not what a women wants at all! I’ve done some research and I’ve heard mixed reviews about Juvederm? I didn’t know if researching it on the internet was a reliable source? I was hoping to get your opinion on which product is best to use for lip enhancement? What is the price of a syringe at your clinic? Thanks a lot for your time its appreciated! Regards.
A.
The problem is that when things don’t go as expected people are very motivated to share their experiences on the internet. However, when things go well they tend not to bother posting on the web which gives a bit of a skewed view of things.
For reasons of personal preference I use Restylane but Juvederm is an excellent HA filler and suitable for use in the lips. Personally I would always go for either Juvederm or Restylane.

In our clinic a 1.0ml syringe of Restylane is £325.
When comparing prices remember that when clinics quote prices per ‘syringe’ you need to be aware of the fact that a syringe can be either 0.5 or 1.0ml therefore you need to look at volume as well.
Also, don’t forget that when choosing a treatment it is not just about shopping around for the lowest price. Having facial injectables such as Botox or Restylane is not like buying the cheapest product from the supermarket – this is your face we’re talking about here. As well as the cost of the actual product you are also paying for the time, advice, expertise and follow-up from a qualified professional.

Is Global Action suitable to give volume to the lips?

November 13th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Forrester,
I have a question for you.; can you use Global Action in your lips to achieve more volume? I read on the website that it is recommended for fine lines and mild to moderate wrinkles but not as an injectable for your lips. There is another one for your lips. I want to achieve volume in my lips and nowhere else. Can you use Global Action in the lips?
Thank you for your time.
A.
I think I’m correct in saying that Global Action is a HA filler from the Teosyal range. This is not a range that I use and so wouldn’t like to comment on its suitability for lips. Personally I would use Restylane Lipp Volume.
I have confidence in the Restylane range because it has been in use for a long time with an excellent safety record. Sorry not to be of more help.

Can you recommend skin treatments for a woman in her 30’s?

November 9th, 2012
Q.
Thank you for your response Peter, yes please if you don’t mind naming some products in your opinion that would be a good buy for skin in its 30’s to help keep it as youthful as possible. You also mention Retinol this is not something I’ve ever heard of, is it a product?. This is such a great way to get information about these types of things. I really appreciate all your help and I am sure these answers will help numerous woman across the country too.
A.
For a vitamin C serum I really rate Medik8 CE-Tetra.
Vitamin C should be applied every morning, as your first ‘layer’ after cleansing. Apply very thinly over the whole face & neck. No advantage in slapping on thickly and no need to use more than once a day. A 30ml bottle of CE-Tetra should last at least two months.

For a Retinol, I can’t recommend highly enough GloTherapeutics Renew Serum. Use before bed. Start only every 3-4 days and build up to nightly over a period of 3-4 weeks to avoid irritation. Don’t use on the neck or lower lids initially.

For info about Retinoids, see my blog http://www.drforrester.co.uk/blog/?p=322

Hope this helps,

Kind regards
