Are there any fillers that would be good for the neck area?

February 13th, 2013
Q.
Hello Dr Forrester,
I have a problem with my neck. My face so far doesn’t look bad at 34, but my neck is starting to get quite a few lines . My question is whether you think that dermal fillers would work for my neck? Also is there anything I can do to prevent further lines? I don’t sit in the sun or use sunbeds etc. Are there any creams or serums that I could use? I normally use body lotion and also whatever moisturiser I put on my face. Also, do you perform fillers on the neck area? Thanks for your time and i look forward to reading any advice that you can give me.
A.
Apologies for my delay in replying. I have been at IMCAS, a cosmetic conference.

The neck can be a problem area as the skin is quite sensitive. Although you don’t sit in the sun I would recommend a sunscreen on the neck and face 365 days a year. Even if it is cloudy there are still UV rays out there.

I would recommend a Vitamin C serum on the neck and face. Choose a serum that has at least 10-15% vit C; don’t rely on creams that contain vitamin C as they rarely have enough to be effective. Remember that this is not an overnight miracle but a long term strategy. I think that the new Medik8 serum called CE-Thione is excellent. In addition to a sunscreen and vit C you should consider a retinoid but because the neck is sensitive you need to choose carefully.

Fillers have a limited role in the neck but a course of something light like Restylane Vital can help. Lastly I am a big fan of INTRAcel which is a type of radio-frequency needling that is beneficial over the whole face and neck.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Can dermal fillers help me to look my age again?

January 3rd, 2013
Q.
I’m 46 years old and have a busy and stressful job and three kids, which has all taken its toll on my face and I look about 100! I have wrinkles everywhere! Around my eyes, on my head, there are millions around my lips which really age me. And my cheeks have sunk and lost their plumpness, again adding to my aged appearance. Can dermal fillers help me with this? I want to look my age again! Thank you, I look forward to hearing your response
A.
Thank you for your question.
I am always relieved when someone says they want to look good for their age rather than wanting to look 20 years younger. The answer to looking the best you can, for your age, usually comes from a combination of treatments. Dermal fillers can immediately restore lost volume but only have a limited effect on superficial lines and poor skin tone/texture. These are often best addressed by prescription-strength skin care and collagen stimulating techniques – my personal favourite being INTRAcel.
If you live in the South-East I would be happy to see you for an assessment.

Would dermal fillers work on my acne scars?

December 11th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Forrester,
I had quite bad acne as a teenager and also as an adult which has left me with with some pitted scars on my face. They are mainly on my cheeks and they are quite noticeable, make-up or not. Do you think that fillers would work to plump out the scars at all? They are not very big, but there are quite a lot of them. Also, if fillers can work would you suggest I have any specific ones in particular?
Thank you for reading my problem and I look forward to receiving any advice you can offer me, Thanks.

A.
Dear Kim,

Fillers can help with plumping pitted acne scarring but often need to be combined with some form of other procedure such as dermaroller or INTRAcel. A hyaluronic acid filler wold be the best choice – something like Restylane or Juvederm.

Would dermal fillers work on my scars?

November 5th, 2012
Q.
Hello,
I would like some advice about a few problem areas that I have on my face. I have two pitted scars on my forehead from when I was a child and had chicken pox. They have faded slightly but are a greyish/blue colour and I am very conscious of them. Do you think dermal fillers would work on them? I don’t expect the colour would change but just the pitted look. I also have crows feet or laughter lines as I like to call them! They are quite obvious and as the rest of my face is pretty smooth I think they look even more pronounced. Do you think I should have fillers or perhaps Botox? I am 40. Thank you.
A.
Many thanks – two good questions.
Dermal fillers certainly have a role in the treatment of pitted scars. However, scars are often tethered to deeper layers which means that fillers may not lift them as much as hoped. Dermaroller can be of some help but I much prefer INTRAcel which is much more effective.

In my opinion Botox is the no.1 treatment for crows feet and almost always works well. The lines are caused by the creasing action of the underlying muscles; filers can appear to work but usually the muscles will start to crease the filler. Gently weakening the muscles with botox is the answer.

I hope this helps, best wishes,

Can dermal fillers lift the jowls?

November 1st, 2012
Q.
Hello, just a quick question; I’ve read a lot lately that dermal fillers, Botox etc can help lift the jowls is this right? I can not see it myself not without surgery. What happens? Is there anything you can do from 30’s onwards to help prevent the jowls dropping? Is it hereditary if my mums have dropped will mine? Do everyone’s at some point drop? Also the ‘V’ lift what is that? Does that lift jowls too? The pics across the internet look for this treatment look great but they look a little fake / altered. Thank you.
A.
Hi, not such a ‘quick’ question! I’ll do my best with a ‘quick’ reply.

Botox is used to lift the jowls with the so-called Nefertiti Lift. Personally I’m not convinced that it does much and hence I don’t offer it. However, dermal fillers do lift the jowls to some extent. As well as fillers I prefer to use INTRAcel to tone and lift the jowls and neck.

Obviously there is some genetic influence in the way our faces age – but don’t despair – just because your mother has jowls doesn’t mean that you necessarily will. The jowling that occurs with ageing is mainly due to the reduction in quantity and quality of collagen that occurs from the 30s onward. Collagen stimulation is what’s needed.

V Lift is a term used to describe the injection of dermal fillers using a particular pattern of injection designed to mimic the V of a youthful face.

These are all very big subjects and difficult to cover quickly.

Hope this has helped.

Best wishes,
