Has my mother had a bad reaction to varioderm?

October 3rd, 2013
Q.
Good day,
My mother had “varioderm” injections at multiple sites of the face. Few hours after injection, she started to have redness and swelling just at the cheeks. Is that expected side effect or should we cosider it allergic reaction and start steroid trestment. My mother has a background of asthma and eczema. So I have two questions ,
1- Use of steroid right now?
2-Risk of recurrent cellulitis?
A.
Hi,
Varioderm is a hyaluronic acid filler and it is common to have a degree of redness and swelling after injection. Without seeing your mother it is difficult to say whether she is experiencing a normal amount of swelling or not, but allergy is highly unusual in response to a hyaluronic acid. There are very few circumstances in which use of steroid would be appropriate, so without a firm diagnosis I would not recommend this. Cellulitis can occur, but again it is very rare and tends to be in cases where large amounts of filler are injected. In addition you would not see a cellulitis immediately after the injections. My suggestion would be to contact your practitioner if you are at all concerned.
Good luck

How safe are dermal fillers?

June 17th, 2013
Q.
Are dermal fillers actually safe and do they work.

Can they be used under the eye and forehead? Does it involve complications, i.e. side effects or any unwanted results.

How long does it last and are the results drastic? Do they involve blood being re-injected into the face and are the results instant. How much does it generally cost? Also how much is rhino plastic surgery – straightening the nose.

A.
Hi
Dermal fillers are safe and work! – they are made from hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Hyaluronic acid binds water to keep skin looking healthy, hydrated and firm – you can see the results immediately following placement. They do not involve blood being re-injected.
It is a medical procedure, so there are some possible risks, but if performed by a qualified doctor these are minimalised. Using different products they can be used under the eye and forehead.
Costs usually starts from £250 upwards depending on the amount required and area it is placed and last usually 4-6 months.
Dermal fillers can be used to change the appearance of the nose.
Good luck
Adam

Is it possible to refill lips which have been treated with Aquamid?

January 7th, 2013
Q.
Hi Dr,
Can one who has had lip augmentation with Aquamid 2 years ago , now refill her lip with a shorter lasting gel such as a hialloronic acid filler over it ? It seems that the previous gel has been maximally disappeared unless a few palpable micronodules in lip contour . and in general what could we do with the remaining gel nodules in treated areas ? what is your opinion about ALAYNA fillers ? Thank you so much
Best regards.
A.
Hello there,
I am very conservative when it comes to fillers and particularly lip fillers where I would only use a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. Although not long-lasting they are very safe and rarely cause problems. In addition they can be dispersed with hyalase.
The question about injecting HA over Aquamid is a difficult one. All I can say is that if the Aquamid has been very settled for a number of years then it might be OK. There is always a risk of the HA triggering problems with the underlying permanent filler.
If the Aquamid nodules are not causing you any bother then I would leave them alone.
I hope this is of some help.
Kind regards,

I need multiple dermal filler treatments, will you do this in one sitting and how much will it cost?

October 12th, 2012
Q.
Hello Peter, My question to you is that i feel i need multiple dermal fillers in different places on my face. I need around my nose and lips, forehead and cheeks. Will you do this in one sitting or break up the treatment? Also do you use a different filler for each particular area? If so do they last the same amount of time? I know its hard not seeing my face but could you give me a ballpark figure for the 3 different treatments together? Thanks!
A.
Hello,

There is no reason why you cannot have multiple fillers at one sitting. Most hyaluronic acid (HA) filler manufacturers produce a range of fillers, each of which will differ in their consistency, the thicker fillers being used more deeply under the skin. If I were treating different areas of the face I might use Restylane superficially, Restylane Perlane more deeply and perhaps Restylane Sub-Q or Emervel Volume in the deeper layers. These decisions would be made depending on the facial area and what we were trying to achieve.

With regards to how long they would last, in general the thicker the filler and the deeper they are placed, the longer they last.
Fillers are almost always priced by the syringe. Beware when comparing prices that some practitioners quote prices per syringe without stating the volume of the syringe. Usual syringe volumes will vary between 0.5ml to 2.0mls. The volume needed will depend on the areas and how much enhancement you were looking to achieve and because of this realistic figures are difficult to quote. Cost might vary anywhere from £300-£900.

Best Wishes,

Would a filler with hyaluronic acid be suitable for me?

September 28th, 2012
Q.
I would like to use a filler containing hyaluronic acid for my lines around nose, etc. I have underactive thyroid condition (Hassimoto) and take 125 mg of levothyroxine daily. Will any product containing Hyaluronic Acid be suitable for me or am I one of those patients who cannot have this type of treatment? If so is it are there any alternatives except for a surgery?
Many thanks
A.
Hello,

There is certainly no reason why a hyaluronic (HA) filler would not be suitable for you. Although synthetically produced, the HA in dermal fillers is almost identical to the natural HA that is widespread throughout the body including the skin.
Q-Med have been making the HA filler, Restylane for 15 years and it has been used millions of times in patients giving it an unparalleled safety record.

Surgery may be an option for you but if you are concerned about the nose-to-mouth lines (naso-labial) then a HA filler would be a good choice.

Best wishes,

A patient developed a rash after having Outline 3 years ago, she would like further treatment for lines and wrinkles, can she be treated with HA’s or Sculptra?

July 16th, 2012
Q.
I have a patient that had Outline 3 years ago ,she developed a rash which still is visable when her skin is hot .she initailly developed redness and moderate swelling around her eye and mouth which was the area of the injections. She had had botox with no ill affect ,She would also like further treatments for lines and wrinkles ,can she be treated subsequently with HAs and or Sculptra for lower facial volume loss safely
A.
Hi

Thank you for your enquiry.

An outline can cause rashes and does take some time to go and I think it would be possible for her to have further treatment and we would generally recommend hyaluronic acid as they are safe in my experience.

If your patient does have Herpes Zoster we would recommend that you cover her with appropriate prophylactic against this with any injection technique.

Many thanks for your enquiry.

Best Wishes
