Can you help me with my acne scarring?

January 20th, 2014
Q.
Dear sir,
I wanted to ask is it possible to get aquamid injection for mild acne starring which is not active and is there any risks?. Im 19 years old and i wanted to get it done but not sure don’t want to risk it and i find other procedures too expensive. Is it possible to get this done for acne starring and how long do you think it would last because its said to be permenant?
Please could you help me and let me know asap thanks you very much
A.
Hi
I don’t do Aquamid as this is a permanent filler and there are many risks involved with this kind of treatments. I use only semi permanent fillers. You can use skin needling techniques such as dermaroller or dermapen to break up the scar tissue and improve the results by combining this with a hyaluronic acid filler you can improve the skin quality however hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent. Scarring after acne is difficult to treat and any treatment will only lessen the problem, not eradicate it completely. Prices depend on the size of the area to be treated, but a full face of dermapen plus skincare products would be £600.
Kind regards
Adam

Can dermal fillers help my acne scars?

July 25th, 2013
Q.
Hello Dr Thorne,
I have acne scars mainly on my cheeks, they are quite bumpy and you can feel how uneven the skin is when you touch it. Over the years the scars have improved but i am still very aware of them without make-up on. Do you recommend dermal fillers for this kind of problem to recreate the volume? I would just like to have even cheeks and no pitted areas really. If fillers are not the solution is there any other treatment that you would recommend? Many thanks for your time.
A.
Hi there, difficult to give you a definitive recommendation without seeing you, it also depends if there is any hypo-(light) or hyper- (dark) pigmentation of the scars, however

– dermal fillers can generally be used to ‘plump up’ the acne scars, though will require regular treatment
– if there is any keloid scarring (due to over-aggresive healing) these usually need a steroid injection
– if they are small cysts this can be removed by ACP electrolysis
– if there is small pitting then a Dermaroller can treat this successfully

Good luck
Adam

Would dermal fillers work on my acne scars?

December 11th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Forrester,
I had quite bad acne as a teenager and also as an adult which has left me with with some pitted scars on my face. They are mainly on my cheeks and they are quite noticeable, make-up or not. Do you think that fillers would work to plump out the scars at all? They are not very big, but there are quite a lot of them. Also, if fillers can work would you suggest I have any specific ones in particular?
Thank you for reading my problem and I look forward to receiving any advice you can offer me, Thanks.

A.
Dear Kim,

Fillers can help with plumping pitted acne scarring but often need to be combined with some form of other procedure such as dermaroller or INTRAcel. A hyaluronic acid filler wold be the best choice – something like Restylane or Juvederm.

Would dermal fillers work on my scars?

November 5th, 2012
Q.
Hello,
I would like some advice about a few problem areas that I have on my face. I have two pitted scars on my forehead from when I was a child and had chicken pox. They have faded slightly but are a greyish/blue colour and I am very conscious of them. Do you think dermal fillers would work on them? I don’t expect the colour would change but just the pitted look. I also have crows feet or laughter lines as I like to call them! They are quite obvious and as the rest of my face is pretty smooth I think they look even more pronounced. Do you think I should have fillers or perhaps Botox? I am 40. Thank you.
A.
Many thanks – two good questions.
Dermal fillers certainly have a role in the treatment of pitted scars. However, scars are often tethered to deeper layers which means that fillers may not lift them as much as hoped. Dermaroller can be of some help but I much prefer INTRAcel which is much more effective.

In my opinion Botox is the no.1 treatment for crows feet and almost always works well. The lines are caused by the creasing action of the underlying muscles; filers can appear to work but usually the muscles will start to crease the filler. Gently weakening the muscles with botox is the answer.

I hope this helps, best wishes,

I have developed some stubborn acne on my cheeks, could i still get dermal fillers in my cheeks?

October 17th, 2012
Q.
Hello Dr Richards, I’m 57 and have gone through some changes recently that all older women go through. I had developed some stubborn acne on my cheeks which has been embarrassing. I’ve been wanting dermal fillers in my cheeks for a while but I’m not sure with this acne if its the right time for me to have this? What is your opinion on this? I have been to see my dermatologist but there isn’t a lot you can do with hormonal acne. I’m just using antibiotics and face wash. Awaiting your feedback, thanks, Polly

I have dark skin but suffered from acne when i was younger, i know have scars on my face and neck, will dermal fillers help?

July 27th, 2012
Q.
Adrian – I’ve got dark skin because my father is Brazilian but when i was 16 i suffered with bad acne, regrettably i couldn’t help but pick them and made it worse, i have scars on my cheeks and some on my neck. I’ve been using bio oil but it hasn’t really helped too much, so i’m thinking dermal fillers is the next step? Do you have any guidance or advice on this? Price? How many treatments? Effectiveness?
A.
Hi

Thank you for your enquiry.

Dermal fillers will not be appropriate for you if you do have acne scars on your face. Normally we would aim to release the scars with a combination of subcision which freezes them internally and possible Dermaroller treamtnet.
