How can I firm up lines and wrinkles?

November 15th, 2013
Q.
Hi Dr Thorne,
I have purchased a product which is meant to firm up lines and wrinkles with ions-but so far I havent seen any improvement.
I am 37 and have lines around my eyes and just above my eyebrows. Should I continue to use this (it cost me £100) or seek Botox treatment or fillers? The lines I have are not very bad but they are getting worse over time so I would like to stop them from getting deeper whilst they are not too bad. What would your advice be?I got in on a popular discount website and I use it but I really can’t see that it is making any difference at all and it is quite time consuming Kind regards,
A.
Hi There Not knowing what the product is and how pronounced the lines are it is difficult to advise you on the possible results. Generally in the areas that concern you Botox is our first choice of treatment and you can get fantastic results with it. I would suggest a consultation to advise you of some results.
Kind regards
Adam

I have a bump on the side of my nose

October 4th, 2013
Q.
I had a permanent dermal filler 5 years ago on my forehead above my nose to fill in the wrinkle. It has now loosened and dropped and I have a large bump to the side of my nose – I can push it up but then have a bump on my forehead which is very noticeable. I would like to know if I can get the filler removed ? and if so where would be the best place to go to as the Clinic I used has now moved and the telephone lines are dead.
A.
Hi,
Yes it is possible to remove permanent dermal filler however I would advise visiting a maxillofacial or plastic surgeon for this as surgery will be required. It is for this reason that it is not advisable to use permanent dermal fillers as they are not easily removed, plus with age the rest of your face changes and what looks good now, may not look good in 10 years time.
Good luck

Has my mother had a bad reaction to varioderm?

October 3rd, 2013
Q.
Good day,
My mother had “varioderm” injections at multiple sites of the face. Few hours after injection, she started to have redness and swelling just at the cheeks. Is that expected side effect or should we cosider it allergic reaction and start steroid trestment. My mother has a background of asthma and eczema. So I have two questions ,
1- Use of steroid right now?
2-Risk of recurrent cellulitis?
A.
Hi,
Varioderm is a hyaluronic acid filler and it is common to have a degree of redness and swelling after injection. Without seeing your mother it is difficult to say whether she is experiencing a normal amount of swelling or not, but allergy is highly unusual in response to a hyaluronic acid. There are very few circumstances in which use of steroid would be appropriate, so without a firm diagnosis I would not recommend this. Cellulitis can occur, but again it is very rare and tends to be in cases where large amounts of filler are injected. In addition you would not see a cellulitis immediately after the injections. My suggestion would be to contact your practitioner if you are at all concerned.
Good luck
Adam

Will dermal fillers work on my nose?

October 3rd, 2013
Q.
Dear Dr Adam,
My nose is not that big and at the same time it is not small. My nostrils are different, one bigger than the other little bit , it just need little fixing, I would like to get my nose more smaller. I wonder once I get the filler and fix the problem in my nose. What will happen to my nose after one year? Will the nose get back to its real shape? Is there any permanent non surgical treatment without risk?

Kind regards

A.
Hi, you can sometimes use dermal filler to even up asymmetry in the nose but it really depends on the individual case. Filler tends to remain a little longer in the nose than in other areas of the face so an estimate would be around 18 months. The nose will eventually return almost to the original shape. Unfortunately there are no permanent non surgical solutions which I would advise you to use. Permanent dermal fillers do exist however I would not recommend their use in this area.
Kind regards
Adam

The artesense treatment hasn’t worked

July 30th, 2013
Q.
I have had artesense done quite recently for acne scarring . The results were ok but over the last three weeks seemed to have disappeared. Why is this I thought this would be a permanent solution or at least semi permanent for some of my deep scarring ? Is this the doctors fault who gave me the injections ? I have had in the past restylane for the same problem and it worked outstanding but of course only lasted 6 months or so. I am so frustrated the doctor that did the artesense is quite old I am wondering if he doesn’t see that well and did the injections wrong ?
A.
Hi
Thanks for your question. ArteSense is a different kind of filler than Restylane and is popular in Canada. ArteSense is comprised of microscopic beads of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) embedded in a collagen paste to allow for injection through a fine needle. As the collagen is absorbed by your body over 3–4 months, new collagen fibers produced by your own body surround these beads , partially restoring the volume of collagen that is absorbed. Approximately four months later, it is recommended that you have a second series of injections to obtain long term results.
However although long term results sound appealing, I would always recommend a shorter lasting product as there is a risk of granulomatous reactions with ArteSense.
Good luck

Would dermal fillers be able help my lines and wrinkles?

July 30th, 2013
Q.
I have reached sixty. My skin is far from perfect as I suffered from acne as a teenager. My weight has always been an issue and a yoyo, therefore my skin is a little saggy in places. I was a smoker for forty of those years and have the tell tale mouth and lip lines, some of which are quite deep….all are very unattractive. I have had a lot of happiness in those years, hence my laughter lines and crows feet, but, also more than my fair share of grief and sorrow which have contributed greatly to the deep crying lines between my eyebrows. My question is, have I missed the boat to improve my looks with minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, ie: botox, fillers, lip augmentation etc and would the cost be prohibitive as I would need so much work?
A.
Hello
Thank you for your question. All of the minimally invasive treatments you describe can still be carried out and will give a refreshed look. There are also different solutions to improve the skin, its volume and the lines you have. The best idea would be a consultation and we can review your main concerns, what you are trying to achieve and give you an idea of costs.
Kind regards

I have a lump under my skin after filler treatment

July 23rd, 2013
Q.
Hi, I am hoping you can help me. I had dermal fillers two days ago on deep wrinkles around my mouth. the filler used was teosyal. One side, in which the wrinkle was deeper has responded well to the treatment. The other side, in which the wrinkle was not as deep, has lump under the skin near the mouth. Although this not painful it does cause discomfort when my mouth is open fully. I have contacted my practioner and am awaiting her call, but would appreciate any advice that you could give me, I am presently using an ice pack on the area.
A.
Hi
This is likely to resolve over time naturally, though It depends how much was injected and which teosyal product was used for how long this may take. I’d try to massage the area yourself and speak with your practitioner who will have a better idea how much was used. If it seems like this will take some time to resolve there is a product called Hyalase which can be injected and will break the product down.
Good luck

I have dark circles under my eyes

July 10th, 2013
Q.
Hi,

I’m 28 and I have really dark under eye circles and also hollow sunken eyes. I was short-sighted and had a very high prescription but I got laser eye surgery done so I don’t wear glasses any more, but not sure if high prescription and sunken eyes are even connected. The way my eyes look really bother me, wanted to know if it’s possible to treat hollow eyes with dermal fillers and can they help reduce the dark circles? If so, then how long will the affect of the treatment last?Which dermal fillers would be most suitable for under the eyes? How should I go about finding the right place and doctor in London, to get it done?

Many Thanks

A.
Hi
If the hollowness that you describe is underneath the eye it may be possible to improve the appearance with dermal fillers, however is it difficult to say without conducting a proper examination. Dermal fillers placed under the eye can make the area appear less dark or if a change in the structure of the under eye region is not desired, if the only problem is that of colour, then carboxytherapy can work very well. Sounds like for you dermal fillers may be best though. Generally a dermal filler will last around 9-12 months however in this region 18 months is common and even when your body has broken down the dermal filler, due to induction of collagen the area will never appear as it did before. Most brands of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have a filler suitable for this region and different practitioners prefer different brands, the most important thing is that your practitioner is comfortable using the brand selected as they all have different properties. There is a filler specifically designed for this region which is Teosyal Redensity II and this is what I’d use.

What treatment can I have for my lip wrinkles?

July 2nd, 2013
Q.
I’m starting to get lip wrinkles and I’m only 35. I did smoke in my 20s but no longer. I seem to have almost scars? My mother has really bad lip wrinkles am I heading that way if they have started to appear at 35? I feel so alone as no one my age has these. It’s really knocked my confidence. I hate to have my photo taken and I’ve just had a baby so it’s hard to avoid the camera. They seem to get worse by the week more seem to appear soon I will have no normal skin left it will all be little lines! What treatment is best?
A.
Hi
Without assessing you whether it is a loss of volume, skin elasticity or overactive lip muscles, I usually suggest some fine dermal filler along the lip border. This gives better shape to the lip and fills in little lines. The good news is this is a quick treatment and results are almost instantaneous, leaving you free to have as many photos as you wish!

Would fillers work to make my lip plumper?

July 1st, 2013
Q.
Hello Dr Thorne,
I wondered whether dermal fillers would be good for my lips? I have quite a big lower lip but my top lip has always been very thin. I don’t want huge duck lips but would like a bit more volume in the top to balance them out somewhat.I have tried lip plumping creams and lipsticks but they don’t give me the effect that I am looking for. Could you tell me any particular brands etc that would be good for my lip and general pricing for this procedure. Also, how long would the fillers last? Thank you in advance.
A.
Hello there I’d definitely consider lip fillers and suggest a small amount along the upper lip margin, to give it a little more definition before adding volume. The brands I like to use are Juverderm Ultrasmile, Restylane Lip and Teosyal Kiss. Average prices for these range from about £275 up depending on amount used. Generally they last for around 4-6 months.
Good luck
